Social Security Expands List of “Compassionate Allowances”

On August 11th, 2026, the Social Security Administration (SSA) added various conditions to its list of “compassionate allowances,” including primary cardiac sarcoma, Walburg micro syndrome, and Bohring-Opitz syndrome (to name but a few). What Is the Compassionate Allowances List?

To understand the significance of the recent expansions to the CAL, you have to first comprehend what this list actually represents. If the CAL contains a specific condition, people who have that condition should experience seamless approval for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) claims.

Normally, the SSA must approach each person’s situation and determine whether their condition meets its definition of a “disability.” This process can be time-consuming, and it includes five different phases of evaluation. Conditions on the CAL are so severe that no reasonable doctor would ever define them as non-disabilities. What Are the New Additions to the CAL?

Each year, the SSA expands the CAL. In 2025, it added 13 new conditions. In 2026, it added 14 new conditions, raising the total number to 14. Most of the new additions are either rare cancers, genetic conditions, or neurological conditions.

Among the new cancers added are uveal melanoma with metastases, primary cardiac sarcoma, primary intracranial malignant melanoma, and hepatosplenic T-cell Lymphoma. The latter is a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that is inherently resistant to normal chemotherapy.

Primary cardiac sarcoma is another rare type of cancer that takes the form of a tumor inside the heart. It is associated with cardiovascular blockages and metastasization in the lungs. Primary intracranial malignant melanoma develops inside the central nervous system (the brain or neck), and it can trigger rapid neurological degeneration. Uveal melanoma is an equally rare type of cancer that develops inside the eye, often spreading to the liver.

Among the genetic disorders added are conditions that result in abnormally small eyes, abnormally small heads, and prominent foreheads. The two new neurological disorders are Lafora disease and malignant migrating partial seizures of infancy (MMPSI).
