VA Considers New Way to Improve Veteran Mental Health

Veteran Mental Health

Mental health is a major priority for the VA, and the organization is continuing to experiment with new ideas and potential treatments to help veterans improve psychologically. Recent reports highlight two of the newest ideas local and federal groups have formulated. An experienced VA disability lawyer in Washington may be able to help you access the mental health treatment you need.

Ozempic-Like Drug Could Help Fight Alcohol Addiction Among Veterans

On August 5th, 2026, Psychology Advisor reported that federal health regulators were examining a new drug that could help combat alcohol addiction among veterans. The VA is set to move ahead with clinical trials involving semaglutide, a type of “GLP-1 receptor.” This is the same category of drug as Ozempic, and it is often useful in treating diabetes.

Although it might seem strange to use a weight loss drug for alcohol dependence, the science seems to check out. Researchers say that semaglutide affects the parts of the brain linked with rewards. Studies have demonstrated that among diabetes patients taking these types of drugs, those on GLP-1 medications experience lower rates of alcohol use disorder (AUD) than those on different drugs.

18 VA medical centers will participate in the trial, and veterans in Seattle may be able to participate in the upcoming trials. Those who wish to try the drug and get help with alcohol addiction should contact their local VA medical center for more instructions on how to proceed.

State Veterans Affairs Agency Encourages Residents to Talk With Veterans More

Although medication can certainly help veterans struggling with mental health issues, human connection and communication can also work wonders. The Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency is encouraging its local residents to have open conversations with veterans about their experiences. A new initiative will motivate family and friends of veterans to ask them about the most rewarding aspects of military service.

The agency believes that these conversations could provide veterans with better self-esteem and self-worth regarding the contributions they have made to their country. In addition, the agency is encouraging people not to stray from difficult topics like mental health and suicide. A conversation on this topic might seem awkward, but it can help ensure veterans get the help they need.

Your local VA disability benefits lawyer may also be willing to talk, especially if you’re struggling with issues with your disability claim or any other legal problem. During a consultation, you can raise any issues you might be facing while receiving targeted legal guidance.
