SSI Makes Various Changes To Reduce Customer Burden

In late September, the Social Security Administration enacted policy updates to expand access to Supplemental Security Income. Some of the changes include:

• Agency no longer includes food for In-Kind and Maintenance calculations.
• Expanded rental subsidy policy exception.
• Expanded definition of a public assistance household.

The SSA says that the changes will help more people access the benefits of SSI with simpler policies and more straightforward access for everyone involved in process, from citizens to agency staff.

Supplemental Security Income makes monthly payments to adults and children with disabilities, as well as adults 65 and over who have a limited income source. SSI helps pay for the most basic human needs like housing and nutrition.
