Suicide Rate Drops in 2024 for US Service Members

USVeteran

The most recent data from the Pentagon shows that the suicide rate for US service members dropped in 2024. This is encouraging news, although each suicide among service members or veterans is unacceptable. If you are struggling with suicidal ideations, you deserve access to effective mental health treatment. If you cannot access this treatment, an experienced VA benefits lawyer in Washington may be able to help.

Department of Defense Releases Latest Suicide Report

On March 31st, 2026, Military Times reported that the Department of Defense (DoD) had released its most recent data regarding service member suicides. The report suggests that suicide rates declined in 2024 compared to the previous year. A total of 471 service members took their own lives in 2024, compared to 531 in 2023. This equates to a drop of about 11 percent.

However, the DoD concedes that the bigger picture is still concerning. An upward trend is still present when one examines the cumulative suicide rate from 2011 to 2024. DoD representatives say that while suicides are never acceptable, the suicide rate among service members closely mirrors that of the greater civilian population. The implication is that serving in the military does not make one inherently more likely to commit suicide.

Most of those who take their own lives are males under 30. Again, this closely aligns with patterns observed in the civilian population. The report also highlights the fact that divorced or separated service members are more likely to take their own lives. Death by firearm was the most common method of suicide among service members.

What About Veterans?

When discussing suicide, it is important to make a distinction between veterans and service members. Veterans are those who have left military service, while service members are those who are still on active duty. The suicide rate among veterans is notably higher compared to that of service members, suggesting that the real risk of suicide occurs after soldiers leave service.

Thousands of veterans take their lives each year. Each day, an average of 17.5 veterans take their own lives, according to the most recent data. While suicides among service members appear to be decreasing in recent years, the opposite is true among veterans.

New Wars Raise New Suicide Risks

The United States is heading into a period of new conflicts, and this could increase suicide risks for both current service members and those leaving active service in the next few years. Recent operations in the Middle East may have been challenging for many service members, and some of these soldiers have undoubtedly witnessed the mayhem of modern war.
