Will I Lose My Home After Cuts to VA Benefits?

Many veterans today rely on something called the “Veterans Assistance Partial Claim Payment” program, which provides relief for those struggling to pay their mortgage installments. This program has proven incredibly controversial, especially after being shut down and replaced in 2022. Now, the situation has spiraled completely out of control to the point where veterans are facing homelessness. If you find yourself in a similar situation, a VA benefits lawyer in Washington may be able to help you review your legal options.
Mistake During Biden Era Compounded by Further Lack of Action
In April of 2026, NPR reported that over 10,000 US veterans had become homeless since May of 2025 thanks to foreclosures brought about by failures within the VA. NPR notes that the root of the problem was a mistake during the Biden era that led to the Veterans Assistance Partial Claim Repayment program being axed.
The manner in which the program was canceled gave veteran homeowners no time to prepare. Suddenly, these veterans faced much harsher repayment terms. Not only that, but they had to pay all of their previously skipped mortgage payments immediately (the program allowed veterans to skip mortgage payments under certain circumstances). With no time to get the money together, veterans faced foreclosure.
Fortunately, investigative journalists exposed the issue and forced the VA to stop foreclosures from occurring. Over the next few years, the government contemplated a potential fix. When the new administration took power, there were renewed calls to simply cancel the program. Mortgage experts warned that canceling the program without a replacement would be disastrous, but the Trump administration went ahead and axed it in May of 2025.
Since then, 10,000 veterans have lost their homes. While it’s not clear how many of these foreclosures were directly caused by the cancellation of the VA home loan program, many veterans probably could have kept their homes if they hadn’t been hit with such a sudden, unexpected financial burden.
NPR estimates that 90,000 veterans are currently behind on their mortgage payments or midway through the foreclosure process. Many of these veterans are disabled due to their military service. The VA claims that it’s working hard to get a new program up and running, but it’s not clear whether anyone is serious about helping these vulnerable veterans.
Even for those who managed to keep their homes, the sudden evaporation of the VA home loan program has led to serious financial burdens. NPR states that many veterans are now facing mortgage payments that are 15% higher.
