Lawmaker Suggests Using AI for Veteran Suicide Prevention

Veteran Suicide Prevention

As the government seemingly cuts funding to mental health treatment for veterans, some lawmakers are suggesting the VA fill the gap with artificial intelligence (AI). Could an AI chatbot really replace a human therapist or counselor? How effective can AI be in suicide prevention? If you need help accessing mental health treatment and you’re having issues with your benefits, a VA benefits lawyer in Washington may be able to help.

Lawmaker Wants to Fund Machine Learning to Identify Suicide Risks

In March of 2026, NextGov reported that a lawmaker from Pennsylvania had suggested that the VA deploy machine learning tools to identify at-risk veterans. A new program could award grants to developers who figure out a way to use AI to detect and evaluate risk factors that contribute to veteran suicide.

While these initiatives are very much in the early stages, NextGov points out that the VA is already using AI technology to address the risk of self-harm among veterans. This is something that many veterans are probably completely unaware of.

The VA first started revealing its use of AI in this field in 2025. At this time, the VA showed over 360 examples of how it was using AI. Some of these examples involved the VA using AI to detect veterans who were experiencing suicidal ideation.

The lawmaker who suggested that the VA continue using AI made sure to note that AI should never replace human therapists and counselors, describing it as a “force multiplier” for existing resources.

Some Are Concerned About the Use of AI for Veteran Mental Health

Regardless of how lawmakers think the VA should use AI for mental health, the reality is that it is replacing human counselors to an extent. Recent cuts to the VA have affected veterans’ access to therapists and counselors. The fact that the VA is turning so heavily toward AI is probably no coincidence, regardless of how the organization tries to justify this change.

One of the most concerning things about the VA’s adoption of AI for mental health is what appears to be the lack of consent among veterans. While the specifics are not clear, Stars and Stripes suggested back in 2024 that the VA may be handing over sensitive mental health information to AI startups with little or no consent from veterans.

Could this be the beginning of a shift that eventually replaces human counselors altogether? This seems unlikely, but anything is possible. The reality is that we are entering the “Wild West” of AI adoption in healthcare, and various groups are rushing toward widespread adoption with very few guardrails.
