New VA Program Provides Resources for Homeless Veterans

Almost $30 Million Set Aside for Veterans Under Homeless Program

On August 17th, 2026, AL reported that the VA had set aside $29 million in funding for a new program called the Senator Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Veterans Healthcare and Benefits Improvement Act.

This law dates back to 2025, but new funding could offer homeless veterans even more resources than before. These include smartphones, tablets, food, clothing, blankets, hygiene products, and “shelter.” The overarching goal is to provide veterans with the technical and practical resources they need to connect with potential landlords.

Part of the funding will also go toward transportation, specifically geared toward helping homeless veterans attend their medical appointments. The VA may also provide free transport for veterans who need to acquire food or attend job interviews. Under this program, veterans may be able to secure transportation to meet with a potential landlord.

That being said, veterans will have to wait until 2027 to get access to many of these resources. The VA is currently inviting transportation companies to submit proposals for how they might assist with their goals, and this process could take time.

Existing Programs and Resources Help Veterans Fight Homelessness

It is important to remember that existing programs already help veterans gain access to reliable shelter. One of these programs is called HUD-VASH, which provides homeless veterans with rental vouchers. Under this system, veterans only have to pay a percentage of their total rental costs, often around 30 percent. While this isn’t exactly “free housing,” it should help numerous veterans get back on their feet and avoid sleeping on the street.

Studies indicate that homeless veterans experience poor health outcomes on a much greater scale than veterans with reliable shelter, particularly in terms of mental health and substance abuse. The suicide risk is also significantly higher for homeless veterans.
