VA Encourages Veterans With Neurological Conditions to Come Forward

VeteranBenefits

In late 2025, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) finally recognized Gulf War Syndrome as a legitimate medical disorder. Although the VA has accepted disability claims based on Gulf War Syndrome since the 90s, many veterans struggling with this issue struggle to receive recognition and fair benefits. In April of 2026, Stars and Stripes reported that the VA was building on its recognition of this issue by encouraging veterans to speak about their issues. If you are struggling with neurological problems related to military service, consider contacting a Washington VA disability benefits lawyer.

National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine Reaches Out to Veterans

A National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine committee sponsored by the VA is reaching out to veterans with neurological conditions. The committee is specifically interested in the experiences of those who served in the Gulf War or conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq after 9/11.

The goal is simple: Determine whether there is a causational link between the substances these soldiers were exposed to in the Middle East and eight different neurodegenerative conditions. This initial step could lead to further improvements in the healthcare treatments available to veterans struggling with neurological conditions.

If you believe your neurological condition stems from your service in the Middle East, you can participate in “virtual listening sessions” starting in May of 2026. If you cannot participate live, you can submit a short, five-minute video explaining your symptoms and your overall experiences.

The committee seems particularly interested in the adverse effects of certain jet fuels, solvents, heavy metals, polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), pesticides, and other substances commonly associated with military service in the Middle East. These substances could be linked to Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, primary lateral sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, peripheral neuropathy, transverse myelitis, neuromyelitis optica, and inclusion body myositis. These illnesses may fall under the general “umbrella” of Gulf War Syndrome.

Could This Study Help Me Access Benefits?

This study could help those with various neurological conditions gain access to VA disability benefits. When medical researchers begin taking these issues seriously, they may accumulate a weight of evidence that leads to a “presumptive” link between military service and the neurological conditions in question. In other words, the VA may automatically approve veterans who file disability claims after developing these conditions (providing they served in the Middle East within a certain timeframe). The VA has already created these presumptive links for dozens of other health issues.

Can a Washington VA Disability Benefits Lawyer Help Me?

Whether you have received a formal diagnosis for your neurological condition or not, a Washington VA disability benefits lawyer may be able to help you get the treatment you need. VA-sponsored health groups are now actively encouraging those with Gulf War Syndrome and similar issues to explain their symptoms to medical professionals, and the formal recognition of this medical condition by the CDC is encouraging. Gustad Law Firm, PLLC serves veterans with neurological conditions in Seattle, Spokane, and Tacoma.
