Senate Report Points to Major Problems in the VA

Legal24

In January of 2026, Marine Times reported that a new Senate report had highlighted glaring issues with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The report specifically pointed to the cutting of 40,000 staff members under the new administration, which analysts say has affected wait times for veterans. Those who seem to be suffering from particularly long wait times are veterans who need mental health treatment. Washington VA benefits lawyers may be able to assist those struggling with long wait times.

Senate Veterans Affairs Committee Claims DOGE Hurt Veterans

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) generated considerable buzz early in this administration’s tenure, and it led to cuts throughout many government agencies and organizations. The VA was not immune, and the Senate report indicates that it lost 40,000 staff members as a result of these cuts.

While most Americans would agree that the United States needs to become more financially responsible, the cutting of resources for veterans proved highly controversial. Despite DOGE’s mandate, the cuts also failed to make the system more efficient. In fact, the recent report indicates that they had the opposite effect.

Specifically, the report indicates that wait times for mental health treatment have risen to over 40 days in many states. This is double what the VA considers “normal.” Veterans in Maryland are reportedly waiting about 54 days to see a mental health provider. Some have to wait much, much longer. For example, a specific clinic in California failed to provide veterans with mental health treatment for 121 days (over four months) after most of its providers walked away.

The Job Cuts Are Not Over

The VA also plans to continue cutting workers throughout the rest of the year. This means that mental health treatment could become even more difficult to access in the future. Other health services may also become less accessible, as the VA has reportedly already lost thousands of doctors and nurses.

Senate Veterans Affairs Committee Demands Answers

At the end of January, the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee demanded answers from the VA Secretary. The Committee accused the VA of stonewalling while highlighting the lack of transparency offered so far. One of the most pressing concerns for the Committee was a full release of the annual veteran suicide report, which is reportedly overdue. The connection between delayed mental health treatment and suicide is obviously a major concern.
